Student loans represent one of the largest categories of debt in the United States. Private Student Loan debt -- a separate category of student loan debt -- represents a significant and rapidly growing aspect of total student loan debt, especially for students attending schools with a Cost of Attendance greater than that which can be covered by Governmental Student Loans. Private Student Loan debt usually carries with it stringent and restrictive repayment obligations which often manifest into problematic situations for borrowers under this form of student loan debt. The purpose of this Mixed-Methods study was to (a) understand the relationship between decision-making competence (DMC) and the acquisition of student loan debt, (b) explore how the phenomena of both boundedness and rationality explain students' indebtedness decisions, and (c) explore the possible harms associated with student loan indebtedness decisions. The study drew upon a sample from a single private university in the United States, and applied the Theory of Bounded Rationality in order to achieve these purposes. Integrative Social Contract Theory, as a conceptual framework, added additional context to the study.

The results obtained by the study were as follows: First, it was observed that the variable of Adult Decision Making Competence (ADMC) had no statistically significant relationship with private student loan debt, F(1, 127) = 0.32, p = 0.5716. Second, it was observed that Private University's Financial Aid officers were perceived as being willfully negligent in informing students about the characteristics of their student loans.

Third, almost universally, respondents indicated that Private University's Financial Aid officers were additionally negligent in providing them with sufficient time to consider the loan instruments offered, and the implications of taking such loans. Finally, it was observed that student loans were perceived to have harmed several of the interviewees, particularly in terms of impeding future plans.
