Thesis (M.S.)--Southeastern Louisiana University, 2013.
While the majority of pregnancies progress without difficulty, occasionally there are women who encounter problems that require hospitalization. Findings in the literature support that stressors among hospitalized high-risk antepartum patients exists, but there are gaps in knowledge that describe the depth and impact of the stressors on the patients and families. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the lived experience of high-risk antepartum patients continuously hospitalized for greater than one week. Purposeful sampling was used, and data collection continued until saturation was reached. Data analysis was based on the method described by Moustakas (1994). Three themes emerged from analysis of the data: fear of the unknown, loss of control, and a sense of protection. Data generated from this qualitative study provides rich, in-depth findings not readily available using quantitative methodology. Strategies for care were identified to assist nurses in improving patient outcomes, thus improving women's health.
