This study examines how Japanese child life specialists' implement culturally appropriate expressive activities for long term pediatric patients of school age and older within a Japanese hospital setting. This study conducted a survey among Japanese child life specialists certified in the US/Canada, who currently work in a Japanese healthcare setting. 8 Japanese child life specialists participated in the survey and an additional semi-structured follow-up interview was conducted with 2 of the participants who completed this survey. Data was analyzed through the framework of Markus and Kitayama's individualistic and collectivist culture (1991), and Bronfrenbrenner's Ecological Systems theory (1979). Results showed that the Japanese cultural context has a strong influence on how it shapes the culture of the hospital, psychological tendencies of children on how they think and act, and the relationship between child life specialists and children. Within this cultural context and social norm, child life specialists take their approaches toward implementing expressive activities, thus making Child Life practice culturally appropriate.
