Thesis (D.H.A.)--University of Phoenix, 2017.
The purpose of this qualitative modified e-Delphi research study was to explore workplace readiness in novice nurses upon graduation. The specific problem is novice nurses are unprepared for the workplace. The research questions were as follows: What barriers in the undergraduate educational curriculum prevent an easy transition into practice for novice nurses? In what ways do potential social or political injustices occur during the educational journey of student nurses? How do nursing leaders support emancipatory knowing? Emancipatory knowing recognizes patterns that require change. The intent within this study was to build consensus among 18 nursing experts from the Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society Global Member Forum about perceptions of best practices in providing nursing graduates a successful transition into practice and first-time employment. The Delphi design was suitable because a group of experts shared ideas about a complex issue (Jordan, 2000). The expert panel achieved consensus over three rounds of inquiry. Consensus indicated competent novice nurses must have critical thinking skills, proficiencies in patient assessment skills, and professional guidance from mentors. The nursing literature supported the complex knowledge and practice component to knowledge attainment in nursing. Research findings supported the hands-on application of theory in the science and art of quality patient care. The research findings revealed the existence of inequities in the education of novice nurses. Emancipatory knowing uncovered a need for action or praxis to reform the nursing curriculum to prepare novice nurses more effectively. Additional research is necessary to support the workplace readiness of graduate nurses.
