520 $a The author contends that such prior literary models as Classicism, Romanticism, Modernism, and Socialist Realism helped, each in its own way, to reify symbolic correspondences between poetic and cultural phenomena in Russia and Poland. She further argues that the succession of social and political paradigms in each country over time, historically interrelated but nationally unique, further strengthened and lent official validation to these habituated cultural interiors.
520 $a The dissertation explores a number of recent poetic movements away from patterns of cultural interiority, which the author discusses in relation to Bakhtin's ideas of addressivity and dialogism, Foucault's "place of power," and Frye's statements regarding the mythological structures and functions of literature. These shifts reflect the examined poets' desire to recuperate attitudes of cultural openness and draw attention away from traditional cultural centers and towards the social margins.
520 $a Partially inspired by postmodern aesthetics but also frequently opposed to aspects of the postmodern ethos, the poets studied employ various representational devices in their strategic adjustments to pivotal cultural tropes as a means of "novelizing" discussion around the national self-narrative. In her analysis, the author shows how recent symbolic renovations often appear as re-readings of canonical literary/cultural texts from a contemporary perspective.
