In the early 1990s in South Korea, less than 1% of marriages were international marriages. As of August, 2013, however, there were 6,325 migrated women who were married to Korean men, which accounts for 9.9% of all resident aliens in South Korea. Due to these increased numbers of international marriages, many problems have occurred. Since these international marriages are started by Korean men who were excluded from the marriage market, they are not based on love but are based on conditions of environmental pressure, which leads to much vulnerability for the women entering the marriages. Moreover, these migrated women suffer from problems such as Korean traditional patriarchal ideology, discrimination and ignorance of regionalism and kinship, family troubles caused by language and culture differences, and violence and sexual violence, and they end up getting divorced and may become socially marginalized.

The divorce rate of migrated women who married Korean men increased more than six times from 1,700 in 2002 to 10,900 in 2012. As of 2012, there have been 36,204 divorces, which is one out of every three married couples. Of these divorces, 79% included women from China or Vietnam. The average length of these marriages was 2.78 years, and 90.6% of the divorces occurred within the first four years of marriage. Although there have not been any scientific studies on the divorce of internationally married migrated women in South Korea, this issue is expected to become a dispute between the countries who send their women and the countries who accept them, because this problem includes racial and human rights issues. As individuals, these migrated women are expected to become part of the seriously poor social strata.

Given this current situation, this study attempts to understand the lives of migrated women who married Korean men, and it looks for a way to welcome and help them from the churches' perspective. As theoretical ground, this study looks into the lives of these women from the perspective of feminist theology and the theology of hospitality through the biblical stories of Hagar and Lot. For qualitative research, this study conducted an interview with six women who migrated to Korea through marriage and then later divorced.

As this current trend in Korean society grows, increasing numbers of women will migrate to Koreaas the result of international marriage. Korean church and society should no longer view these women as outsiders. We should consider the pain and suffering they go through due to prejudice and a lack of understanding. Moreover, we also need to examine the situations in both their families and society where they experience conflicts, violence, and violation of human rights. We should help them to grow as wives, as mothers, and as human beings who resemble God while they suffer from a difficult reality.
