While music genres have been shown to be a strong measure of musical preferences in adolescents, research has not been conducted on children, which hinders the establishment of a developmental perspective on musical preferences. The present study examines musical preferences in both adolescents ( N = 161) and elementary school children (N = 153). Participants rated their preferences for 50 clips of music. Musical preferences were measured with the five-factor MUSIC Model. Intense, sophisticated, and contemporary factors remained steady, but mellow and unpretentious factors loaded together -- herein referred to as relaxed, and a new factor appeared herein referred to as mature. The age groups displayed similar results together and separately, showing the MUSIC model is effective in measuring musical preferences in younger children. Younger children had significantly greater preferences for most of the attributes and songs. Results showed that over time, preferences for intense, sophisticated, contemporary, and relaxed music decreased while preferences for mature music increased. Exploring mature music and if children favor it could inform teachers which songs are good vehicles for teaching music concepts.
