Thesis (Ed.D.)--Washington State University, 2016.
The purpose of the study was to take powerful place-based pedagogical methods and examine how mindfulness might influence the experience of educators engaged in place-based teaching. To examine what mindful place-based education (PBE) might look like, I used a qualitative, constructivist grounded theory approach to guide data collection and analysis. Data were collected at the Inside Outside School (IOS), a school that uses PBE as a central theme. The study began by conducting a mindfulness workshop at IOS and then collecting data to understand how teachers were constructing meaning around their experiences using mindfulness and PBE together. Data were collected primarily by interviewing the three teachers at IOS throughout the semester. This study found that mindfulness and PBE, practiced together, may create a synergy that benefits the learning environment by enhancing PBE planning for teachers, providing deeper experiences of place, and a richer problem-posing format. Because mindful PBE is a new combination of terms, there are many possibilities for future research, two noteworthy questions that came out of this study are (a) is mindful PBE something that is adaptable to many different places and cultural settings, (b) does mindful PBE enhance a person's ability to recognize humanity in others?
