Thesis (M.A.)--Eastern Michigan University, 1997.
Maxine Greene has been an important figure in Education for over thirty years. Her work in educational philosophy, aesthetics, and curriculum development has centered around her sense of importance of the imagination. Since 1978, she has addressed the problems and intricacies of literacy in her work. Her work has not been widely considered in the field of English, although she has useful and important insights to offer on reading and writing. This paper analyzes Maxine Greene's thinking about literacy as represented in Releasing the Imagination, her most recent book. The central contributions she makes there to the discourse on literacy are to stress the importance of considering situated contexts, including imaginative texts, and understanding the dialectical nature of literacy. Her insights and perspectives have much to offer writing teachers and could help teachers grow and learn in their profession.
