There is little research exploring the effectiveness of standardized patients (SPs) as a teaching and evaluation method in occupational therapy (OT) curriculum. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between standardized patient encounters (SPEs) and fieldwork performance evaluation (FWPE) scores for occupational therapy (OT) students in an entry-level master's OT program. Using the Constructivist Learning Theory and Andragogy as the Instructional Theory of adult education (Knowles' model of Experiential Learning) as the conceptual framework, the purpose of the study was to inform OT academicians about the usefulness of including SPEs in their OT curriculum as a teaching tool and formative evaluation method. This study used a retrospective, case-control design; N = 142; controls (n = 61); cases (n = 81). Fieldwork performance scores from the first of two level II fieldwork practicums were collected and analyzed collectively (total FWPE scores - TOT) and separately [(for each of the 7 domains on the FWPE: Fundamentals of Practice (FOP); Basic Tenets (BTOT); Evaluation and Screening (EAS); Intervention (INT); Management of OT Services (MOT); Communication (COM); and Professional Behaviors (PRO)]. Cumulative grade point average (GPA) was a covariate. Results of the study reveal no statistically significant difference in the TOT FWPE scores or the 7 FWPE domain scores between those who did and did not have a SPE. When controlling for GPA, there was no statistically significant difference between those who did and did not have a SPE. Further studies are needed to gain a more extensive analysis of the value of including SP encounters in preparing students for level II fieldwork.
