Significant impairments have been identified in the area of language and communication for children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). These deficits cause social and communication challenges for those diagnosed with ASD. Repetitive behaviors, lack of language development, little to no interest in conversation and along with the inability to participate in eye contact are frequently observable behaviors among this population. These impairments make it difficult for students with ASD to interact with individuals in a social setting. Since children with ASD tend to be emotionally connected to their artwork it is suggested by Kornreich and Schimmel (1991) that language can be developed through the use of art. This particular study builds upon that premise. The teacher/researcher structured art sessions intended to foster language and communication skills in a 16-year old male student diagnosed with ASD. Graphic images were introduced by the teacher/researcher and then discussed with the student under study. He was also given an opportunity to answer structured questions independently. Additionally, the opportunity to introduce and explain his own drawings provided an opportunity for the student under study to initiate conversation and improve his language and communication skills. The results of this particular study suggest that art therapy is another intervention that can be relied upon to improve and increase language skills in young people diagnosed with ASD.
