Prior research has identified two sources of motivation: extrinsic and intrinsic. One potential extrinsic motivator is a scoring mechanism, known as a rubric in educational settings and a performance evaluation in employment settings. Scoring mechanisms, referred to as rubrics in this study, have been shown to impact performance yet their impact on motivation is unknown. This study theorized that individuals who have a high achievement orientation will experience an increase in intrinsic motivation, compared to their counterparts who have average or low achievement orientation. Moderator analysis was used and found no statistically significant differences between the groups based on achievement orientation level. Additionally, there was no gender differences found based on an ANOVA between female and male participants and an analysis of the intrinsic motivation scores between females and males. Future research could focus on the impact of rubrics on performance across educational and employment settings.
