Data were collected to determine if English language learner (ELL)-focused professional development (PD) was an effective means to increase teachers' confidence for working with ELLs in the classroom. Teachers completed a pre- post-Likert-type scale survey to determine if such a PD experience focusing on language functions as a tool to support ELLs' development of academic English would increase teachers' level of confidence for supporting ELLs. During the PD, teachers were trained in the use of language function posters, which included (a) graphic representations of language functions, (b) sentence frames at various proficiency levels connected to the language functions, and (c) color-coded scaffolds designed to help ELLs access the resources. Collected data suggest that ELL-focused PD can be an effective means to increase teachers' confidence in supporting ELLs in the classroom.
