What follows is an account of a journey into myself through the personal art experiences and self-explorations which have been undertaken during my Union Graduate School - West doctoral program. This program has been an interdisciplinary study of Art Education, Art Therapy and Psychology.

From these studies I had learned that art is a pathway to self-revelation, My plan was to personally test the validity of this concept, which is basic to the growing field of Art Therapy, I wanted to become involved in art-making after many years of art-teaching, and deliberately re-sensitize myself to the dynamics of the creative processes. To this end, I used myself as a phenomenological case study-of personal growth through the catalyst of art as a therapeutic re-creative modality. Thus, I became a living role model for the values of creative expression in order to illustrate and project the therapeutic validity of art-making and thereby to prepare myself to become a more authentic art therapist/art educator capable of facilitating the growth of others.

I had carefully disciplined and prepared myself for my personal journey. I had taken many university courses in the fields of art therapy and psychology to supplement my B.A. and M.A. in Fine Arts, surveyed the pertinent literature, and participated in many experiential workshops conducted by other art therapists and psychologists, Also, I had turned my own school setting into a supervised internship site, designing a pilot program in Art Therapy for behavior problem adolescents which linked theories of art therapy and art education with actual practical application. The implications of this successful program in students' response and self-growth were then shared with other professionals through various presentations and workshops, both for the Los Angeles Unified School District and for the larger community of national art therapy and art education organizations. As I began to realize the impact these experiences were having on myself and others, I became convinced I was on the right track at last.

These experiences were synthesizing all of my past learnings, personal and professional, revitalizing me and giving me new direction. I requested and was granted a sabbatical year of independent study to facilitate my personal quest, exulting in the gift of time and space to do research into myself.

Prepared as I was intellectually for the journey towards a greater understanding of both art as a therapeutic process in general and my own art-making as a particular example of it, I was not prepared for the emotional intensity and depth of this highest personal learning experience of my life. It touched me to my very core and led eventually to a self-transformation through an altered state of consciousness.

It is to elucidate myself to myself, to bring me back to the world of external reality once again, that I now write this self-reflective essay. I seek distance and disengagement after dwelling within for close to a year, knowing it is now essential to break away from the powerful narcissistic cathexis I have formed to my own art work. I want to refine my insights into my own personal and creative behaviors during this incredible experiential journey, and to extrapolate meaning for others. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).
