The principle of original order, originating from the nineteenth-century European paper-based records tradition, has been a guiding principle for archivists in the arrangement and description of archival records for more than a century. Modern information technologies have changed the way records are created, stored, and used. Whether the principle of original order can be adapted and applied in digital environments has been an open question in the archival community for the past two decades. This dissertation research has been designed to investigate the validity of the principle of original order in the organization and representation of digital archives. Through a comprehensive review of literature, the study constructs a conceptual framework to describe how original order is defined, what it is used for, and how it is represented in the archival system. Under the guidance of this framework, the study observes and analyzes three digital archival systems to identify and interpret transformation that has taken place in the definitions, purposes, and representations of original order when electronic records are transferred from recordkeeping systems and processed into digital archives. The research results indicate that electronic records have identifiable organizational structures that are transferable to the archival system for archivists to perform legitimate archival purposes. The key to the future success of digital archives, as suggested in this study, may well lie in the continued pursuit by archivists of the principle of original order to bring archival representation systems up-to-date to reflect the dynamic and multi-faceted digital reality.
