Thesis (M.A.)--Northern Arizona University, 2015.
In this paper, I argue that Dine street art demonstrates the intersection of theory, activism, and art as it employs intellectual sovereignty, spiritual alterities, and the politics of the aesthetic. Utilizing Robert Warrior and Andrea Smith, this thesis engages with a critical discussion of intellectual sovereignty as a process of critical discourse in which Indigenous Studies speaks to and unsettles other disciplines and topics. This paper also takes up the subject of spiritual alterities through the work of Perez and engages with the alter-space opened up by street art and it's relationship to sovereignty. Finally, engaging with the politics of the aesthetic, this paper will look at the political nature of street art and how sovereignty is enacted in communal and creative spaces.
