The two-phase solvent-extraction method developed in our laboratory for the treatment of canola has been adapted and optimized on the bench and semi-pilot-plant scale for the production of rapeseed meal from Chinese rapeseed. The seed was treated with the two-phase system consisting of either methanol with 10% ammonia and 5% water (CH$\sb3$OH/NH$\sb3$/H$\sb2$O) or methanol with 0.08% sodium hydroxide and 5-10% water (CH$\sb3$OH/NaOH/H$\sb2$O) as the polar phase, and hexane as the non-polar phase. The impurities went into the methanol phase and the oil into the hexane phase.

Results of CH$\sb3$OH/NaOH/H$\sb2$O treatment also proved that sodium hydroxide could be substituted for ammonia and facilitate the oil extraction and detoxification; nevertheless, it was less effective in removing glucosinolates than CH$\sb3$OH/NH$\sb3$/H$\sb2$O.

A reciprocating liquid-liquid extraction column (Karr column) was used for the semi-pilot-plant scale oil extraction of ground rapeseed suspended in CH$\sb3$OH/NaOH/H$\sb2$O or CH$\sb3$OH/NH$\sb3$/H$\sb2$O.
