Thesis (Ph.D.)--Yale University, 1991.
This thesis studies the relationship between market and state in China's economic reformation in the post-Mao era. The point of departure is a critique of the view that marketization in state socialist countries is a process of progressive economic change and the opposite view that market mechanism can hardly be brought into play unless a fundamental change is effected to redraw the state-economy boundary. It is argued that the main weakness of these views lies in their reliance on a vague or narrowly defined notion of market as the sole reference point and in their treatment of the state as a structurally constant variable. Next, an analytical model of marketization is formulated, which examines the functioning of market in terms of the relationship between the price system and organizational decision-making and lays out hypotheses on how such relationship is affected by changes in the structural conditions of state power. The backdrop against which this model is elaborated and tested consists of seven chapters of discussion on the restructuring of the state's command chains in the reform and its impact on urban industrial organizations. Based on analyses of data collected from two case study trips and from secondary sources, it is found that structural changes of the state in the 1980s fostered a synergetic interplay between disintegrating power structure of the state and expanding exchange relations. Such interplay not only tended to exacerbate economic inequalities and inefficiency, but also helped sustain the influence of fragmented state power, complicated the politics of reform, and heightened tensions in labor relations, thereby adding to the difficulties on China's road toward post-communist society.Subjects--Topical Terms:
