This study reports findings based on the first large-scale social network survey in China, conducted in 1986. By analyzing the data on discussion networks from a sample of 1,011 employed residents of Tianjin, the third largest city in China, the current study describes the general social network patterns in urban China and explores the factors that are important in the formation of these social networks. The results are compared with findings based on the social network data from the American General Social Survey (1985).Subjects--Topical Terms:

The typical social network in urban China is large but socially homogeneous. Most of the network members are either kin or coworkers of the focus person and they are densely connected. There is also a strong presence of Party members in the networks. In comparison, American discussion networks are also dense and socially homogeneous, but they are much smaller, less homogeneous and less dense. There are more kin, more friends, and fewer workplace ties in the American networks than in the Chinese ones.

Network patterns vary among people of different social groups in China. People of higher social status are able to maintain a larger, more diverse, and more loosely connected network with more ties to politically influential people. Middle-aged people also seem to be in the best position to have diverse ties from kin and work. In comparison to women, Chinese men's networks are much more work-oriented and less kinship-oriented; men are also much more successful in political networking. These findings are generally consistent with the findings based on the American GSS 1985 data.

The study also explores the macro-social factors that affect the formation of individual social networks in urban China. The focus is on the prevalence of workplace ties in Chinese discussion networks. The proposed explanations point to the organizational characteristics of Chinese workplaces. It is argued that the comprehensive provision of essential goods and services by Chinese workplaces in a non-market economy has created both a strong need and ample opportunity for workers to establish inter-personal ties at work. The empirical findings support these arguments.
