This dissertation takes a comparative approach to the analysis of sixteen better known stories in twentieth-century Chinese and American literature. 520 $a This dissertation takes a comparative approach to the analysis of sixteen better known stories in twentieth-century Chinese and American literature. The underlining principle of this study is to situate these sixteen stories in their cultural contexts for better understanding and fuller appreciation of not only their literary values but also the cultural environs from which the stories emerged.
520 $a A considerable section of the dissertation consists of original English translations of those eight Chinese stories under analysis. The inclusion of the translations is not merely for convenience but also, more importantly, for the purpose of creating better English versions, for, in most cases, published English translations of Chinese stories have been quite unfaithful to the original texts and irreverent to their authors.
520 $a In each chapter, a section is devoted to the historical, cultural, and social background of the pair of stories and authors. This comparative cultural approach is to aid the reader in grasping the story through a more comprehensive view of the big picture. Therefore, not only detailed information is provided about the authors, but cultural background knowledge is also furnished about the stories. All such information and discussions aim to provide a historical, cultural, and social perspective from which each story can be appreciated for its historical, social, and cultural significance.
520 $a At the same time, a section is devoted in each chapter to the comparative study of literary and textual issues of the stories, such as the plot, the characters, the language, and the use of archetypes. Through such analyses, a more general trend will be revealed about both Chinese and American short fiction in the twentieth century as they form a contrast not only in style but also in other areas. Such discussions also make a link between the literary issues and the cultural issues discussed in earlier sections, as the study leads the reader to an enlightenment otherwise not available.
