520 $a The Teachers' Test of Moral Reasoning (TTMR) was developed and used in the first phase study. Subjects were asked to rate the importance of each of 12 "consideration statements" related to moral dilemmas presented in story form and to rank the three most important statements from each story. Forty-three teacher college students served as the novice group and 26 teaching faculty and ex-teachers were nominated to serve as the expert group.
520 $a Item analyses were performed on ratings of individual items, and t-tests were used to compare rankings. Results of the item analyses did not clearly show differences between these two groups. T-tests comparisons of the weighted scores for the rankings, however, did show that the experts scored higher than the novices on the TTMR.
520 $a Phase two of the study employed the revised TTMR and the Chinese Defining Issues Test (DIT). Samples included 223 primary school teachers and 108 teacher college students. The primary school teachers were divided into morally expert and less morally expert teachers, according to the morality nomination. The peer popularity nominations also separated the teachers into popular and less popular teacher categories.
520 $a Thirty-two indexing methods for the TTMR had been tried in order to see which consistently yielded the best results. Findings showed that Index 1 was most valid and reliable. Validity testing also showed that: (1) TTMR scores more strongly associated with morality nominations than with popularity nominations; (2) the TTMR scores of the morally expert teachers were higher than those of the less morally expert teachers; (3) the TTMR scores of the primary teachers were higher than those of the teacher college students; and (4) the TTMR was modestly correlated with the Chinese DIT.
520 $a Results also indicated that, compared with the Chinese DIT, the TTMR better differentiated the morally expert teachers from the less morally expert teachers.
