Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Hawai'i at Manoa, 1992.
This dissertation provides systematic, simultaneous comparisons of three total fertility rates (TFRs): age-specific-birth-rate-TFR (ASBR-TFR); age-parity-specific-birth-probability-TFR (APBP-TFR); and parity-duration-specific-birth-probability-TFR (PDBP-TFR). The conventional TFR is calculated from ASBRs while the last two TFRs are calculated from period parity progression ratios. The mathematical demography required for a full understanding of the various TFRs is not found in the existing literature. This study pioneers a path for the comparison of period fertility measures which are adjusted for age, parity (or birth order), duration in marriage and duration in parity (or birth interval), and combinations of these factors.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The data used in this study are two tabulations of China's 1982 One-Per-Thousand Fertility Survey and reconstructed birth histories from China's 1987 One-Percent Population Survey. An empirical result is that, from the 1960s to 1980s, APBP-TFRs (introduced by Whelpton in 1954) were numerically very close to ASBR-TFRs but the birth-order components (BOCs) were different between them. A compensation mechanism is proposed to explain this result. Also, PDBP-TFRs were substantially greater than APBP-TFRs before 1982 but not after 1982. This result is explained by examining age-parity-duration-specific birth probabilities.

Two new TFRs are proposed: an age-parity-duration-specific-birth-probability-TFR (APDBP-TFR) which incorporates the duration factor into APBP-TFR; and a new PDBP-TFR with an age restriction in its calculation. A new logic of the relationship among these five TFRs is developed, providing a useful analytic framework for studying algebraic relationships among TFRs and for developing simulation schemes in future research.

Other empirical findings include: (1) APDBP-TFRs are empirically close to APBP-TFRs; and (2) age-standardized TFRs are sensitive to changes in age at childbearing. Methodological innovations include: (1) the multi-state life table technique is systematically and consistently used in the calculations of all the TFRs; (2) the concept of "stationary birth" is introduced; and (3) the advantages of various decomposition methods for the comparisons of measures are demonstrated.
