Thesis (Ph.D.)--Stanford University, 1993.
This research examines democratization patterns and their relationship with the installation, consolidation and pre-conditions of democracy. The pattern measures were constructed to categorize democratic transitions according to whether a transition is a gradual one, and whether political rights lead civil liberties or civil liberties lead political rights during the transition process. We have designed three panels and used ANOVA, GLM, structural equation and tree models to analyze the data, which covers the development paths from 1973 to 1991 of 103 states in transition. We found that democratization patterns do have significant effects on democracy, and that economic and international factors affect the democratization process in a way and scope quite different from what we learned before. Based on these findings, we suggest that gradualism will help both the installation and consolidation of democracy. But the development of political rights is independent from the development of civil liberties. This research also suggests that communication, education and international diffusion, rather than economic development and international aid, are the main causes of the "third wave" and final establishment of democracy in general.Subjects--Topical Terms:
