Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Michigan, 1992.
The University of Michigan has one of the largest contingents of students from the People's Republic of China. In this dissertation the author examines this group and its political activities and views. The author intends to document the meaning of terms like "democracy," "capitalism" and "socialism" among the Chinese students. There are three major areas of inquiry in this work. First in the hopes of finding explanations for varying views, levels of political activity and militancy amongst Chinese students, the dissertation examines geographical background, class background and immigration status among other variables. Using in-depth and open-ended interview methods, we seek to find patterns behind the political activism of Chinese students in the United States. A second area of inquiry is the origins of the students' ideas. On the one hand is the modernization/diffusion theory. It holds that the Chinese student movement is the result of the spread of democratic ideas, particularly through the "Open Door" policy established by Deng Xiaoping after the death of Mao Zedong. On the other hand, the ideas may be a product of historically specific material conditions. A third area of inquiry is the class consciousness expressed by the students. One theory says that they should express New Class class consciousness that is neither bourgeois nor proletarian. Another theory--a Maoist theory elaborated by the Gang of Four--is that the student movement is seeking to implement free enterprise organization in the economy in the guise of a democracy movement. Each of these larger theories has major inadequacies in application to the relatively narrow issue of the politics of Chinese students in the United States, so it will be a burden of this work to suggest new but grounded lines of theoretical inquiry.Subjects--Topical Terms:
