This dissertation approaches intercultural communication from a rhetorical and historical standpoint. It addresses an extremely topical issue: How are foreign ideas, especially those at odds with the traditional values and world views of a culture, made comprehensible when introduced into that culture? The study focused on three Chinese public discourses--Yan Fu's Heavenly Evolution (1898), Tan Sitong's A Study of Humanity (1899-1901), and Liang Qichao's A New People (1902-04)--which contributed to a widespread acceptance of some aspects of Western learning in China at the turn of this century.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Methodologically this study has applied an expanded and refined version of Lloyd Bitzer's notion of rhetorical situation. The resulting methodological framework assumes that the three Chinese discourses responded not only to the urgency of the critical events which evolved from China's tragic encounter with the modern West, but also to the need for continuity of its discourse tradition.

Analyses of the three cases show that there was a process of creative interpretation of Western ideas, a process which was guided by sensitivity to a generally perceived rhetorical situation in late twentieth-century China. The three writers applied four basic rhetorical tactics to make their interpretations of the Western ideas more persuasive. (1) They all argued that they were presenting not just Western ideas but also significant solutions to the exigency of their time. (2) None of them tried to suggest that these Western ideas were entirely new to the Chinese tradition. (3) They approached these ideas from a strictly collectivist rather than individualistic standpoint, a standpoint that had been taken for granted in the Chinese tradition. (4) They exploited the powerful traditional Chinese modes of argumentation in presenting these ideas.

This dissertation advocates taking the perspective of the "taker" or "host culture" rather than the perspective of the "giver" or "guest culture" in intercultural communication studies. It also challenges the notions of "reception" and "assimilation" of foreign ideas insofar as they assume that the native interpreters simply transmit foreign ideas unchanged.
