The concepts of critical hermeneutics served as the methodological framework for this research and study. The critical hermeneutic tradition consists of interpretive theory grounded in knowledge as understanding, language as our "house of being" (Heidegger 1971) and discourse as conversation leading to action.

To investigate the gift giving practices at Chinese Universities, I used field based hermeneutic research. In order to develop field questions, pilot interviews were held. Categories that emerged which shaped this research were: (1) Personal and Institutional History as Narrative supported by Ricoeur (1981) and Gadamer (1975); (2) Fusion of Horizons discussed by Gadamer (1975); (3) Communicative Competence and Action again supported by Gadamer (1975), Heidegger (1971) and Habermas (1979); and the final category being (4) Community of Memory developed by Bellah et al. (1985).

I conducted face-to-face conversations supported by tape recording and note taking. The transcriptions of the conversation were returned to the participants so that they could edit them. I analyzed them and then drew implications and recommendations from the findings.

This research and study are significant in that it produced a new model for working with Chinese students while they matriculate through American universities. The model should result in enthusiastic support of their alma mater in later years.

It was concluded that no human society has a monopoly on philanthropy. Gift giving is as important today as it was for man throughout history. The principle of gift giving is firmly rooted in Chinese culture. Because we live in a more global environment today, people are beginning to view their universe without borders and the practice of gift giving can be expanded. This is especially true for the Chinese alumni who have been a part of an American university community. It is imperative that the university develop ways to maintain this sense of community once their graduates return to their homelands.
