Thesis (Ph.D.)--State University of New York at Buffalo, 1992.
Through the discussion of two American women writers--Kate Chopin and Edith Wharton--and two Chinese women writers--Zhang Jie and Zhang Xinxin--and their works, I try to explore the awakening of consciousness of the woman to her self as an individual and independent being. The process of the awakening often takes the form of questioning and longing. It is longing for knowledge and understanding of the outer world and the woman's inner world. It is longing for change of the unsatisfying status quo. The establishment of new selfhood and annihilation of the old self progress alternately.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Economic independence and equal rights in all aspects are important for a woman to be able to stand up on her own, however her quest for self-discovery and her own worth is mostly a struggle within herself; it is a constant search and exploration of a new awakening, a new vision, and a new self in which the woman has to break away from all the outside and inside obstacles, confinements and constraints. This is an endless process, hence the myth of awakening.

Of the four writers, the American and Chinese are several generations apart. With such vast discrepancies in historical time and economic, political, and social systems, the differences are obvious in the women's views and attitudes in life. Nevertheless, besides showing thematic, structural, and stylistic similarities, the authors and their works share much of the same feelings and confront the similar problems and dilemmas.
