In his last years, Mahler reached an artistic culmination with Das Lied von der Erde. This most personal work of Mahler's generally has been accepted as a summing-up of his musical career, a crowning achievement that stands as a fascinating manifesto of his life and work. The creation of this extraordinary masterwork resulted from a long process of spiritual maturation, and from the compatibility of cross-cultural influences at Mahler's time.Subjects--Topical Terms:

This study explores, in the philosophical and musical dimensions, the intimate relationship between Mahler's preceding works and Das Lied, a relationship between the earlier anticipation and the later fulfillment in his output. Mahler's life-long preoccupation with certain philosophical ideas led him to choose those particular Chinese poems as the most appropriate medium for his final confession. As a result, many of the influential philosophical ideas in Mahler's life are closely akin to and elevated by those reflected in Das Lied. Mahler's involvement with Chinese poetry and music resulted from an affinity between his personal characteristics and Chinese philosophy rather than his alleged interest in exoticism. Mahler's conception of his life philosophy is fulfilled with Das Lied. Two foremost Mahler scholars (La Grange and Mitchell) endorse the scholarly research into this topic.

As the last one of his vocal-symphonic works, Das Lied fulfills all the musical expressivities Mahler had long pursued. Many developmental devices already anticipated in Mahler's earlier works are further exercised. Constant renewal of musical materials reveals Mahler's personal philosophy of ceaselessly pursuing artistic culmination and perfection. Free from conventional constraints, the vocal-symphonic integration is achieved with formal simplicity and contemplative lyricism. More significantly, the Chinese music materials operate as unifying elements of the entire symphonic song-cycle, demonstrating Mahler's indispensable affinity with the Chinese ideology that so powerfully influenced the ultimate formation of his life philosophy. The study confirms the significant position of Das Lied as Mahler's artistic culmination, an unique, singularly prepared phenomenon in the history of western music.
