Thesis (Ph.D.)--Brown University, 1991.
This research examines the relationship in China between the economic reforms since 1978 and spatial mobility, and the patterns of migration differentials of permanent and temporary migration, using Zhejiang province as a case study. Data used in the analysis come mainly from two surveys. The first is the 1986 National Urban Migration Survey, Zhejiang Part, which was sponsored by the Population Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. The second survey was conducted in early 1988 by the Population Research Center at Hangzhou University. These two surveys used the same sampling strategy and questionnaire, and collected detailed information on migration status and individual as well as household characteristics. The analysis focuses on three levels: macro, household, and individual. Both crosstabulation and multivariate regression, mainly logistic regression, are applied in the analysis.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Results suggest that, by creating a greater number and more diversified set of opportunities, economic reforms have resulted in greater spatial mobility but usually less migration differentials. Regions with higher levels of formal industrialization are associated with a higher level of rural-urban permanent migration, but regions with more developed rural industries experience higher levels of temporary rural out-migration. At the household level, both non-agricultural household registration and a higher income facilitate spatial mobility in China. At the individual level, in comparison to non-migrants, permanent migrants are younger, male dominated, better educated, and more likely married and in white collar occupations; temporary migrants, by contrast, are older, although also male dominated, better educated, married, and in white collar occupations. If the comparisons are between permanent and temporary migrants, the former group are younger, more likely single, better educated, but less male dominated.

Conclusion. The importance of rural industrialization does not seem to lie in its ability to retain population in rural origins, but in the positive consequences that result from reducing inequalities between urban and rural sectors; government control of de jure migrants does not stop large numbers of de facto rural-urban migrants; government migration policy plays an important role in shaping patterns of internal migration and characteristics of the migrants involved, but both permanent and temporary migration have their own rationales.
