This dissertation intends to provide a better recognition and understanding of the role early Chinese immigrants played in the development of Idaho during its growth from a mining territory to a modern state (1865-1910). It reviews Chinese mining enterprises in four major areas of Idaho: the north central mining camps, the Boise Basin, the Wood River valley mining field, and the Coeur d'Alene area in Northern Idaho. A study of the other economic activities of laundering, vegetable gardening, merchandising, domestic service, and practicing herb medicine by the Chinese in the two major commercial towns of Boise and Lewiston further reveals the contribution they made to the development of the state. Social organizations and cultural life are also studied with an understanding that the Chinese congregated and organized for two reasons: the force of exclusion arising from white racism and the need for sharing sentiments and support among themselves. Finally, it examines the anti-Chinese movement in Idaho in the 1870s and 80s.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Secondary resources of scholarly written books and articles about the Chinese experience in California and other Northwestern states have provided this dissertation with valuable insights into the Chinese immigrants' work and life in Idaho.
