Thesis (M.S.)--San Jose State University, 1993.
This participation observation examines the relationship between media use and acculturation among 10 first-generation Chinese-American families in Silicon Valley. It finds that media use reflects the subjects' acculturation level but does not necessarily lead to high acculturation. Their media use gratifies, to varying degrees, some noticeable acculturation needs such as the improvement of English, acquisition of information, and acquaintances with the host culture.Subjects--Topical Terms:

It finds that these subjects, as a group, demonstrate a fairly low level of acculturation, living a financially secure "bicultural life." Their acculturation process seems to suggest a "ceiling effect.".

Contributing to this unique acculturation process that often bumps into a "ceiling" are their formal education in the United States, the age at which they arrived, the perception of a "glass ceiling," and the cultural environment in the workplace.
