Where and how do subduction zones start? This essential question is vital to our understanding of plate tectonics and the evolution of Earth, but the process of subduction initiation is not currently well understood. In the following dissertation, this fundamental topic is addressed.

Where and how do subduction zones start? This essential question is vital to our understanding of plate tectonics and the evolution of Earth, but the process of subduction initiation is not currently well understood. In the following dissertation, this fundamental topic is addressed.

The work presented here focuses on the island of Palawan, Philippines which is thought to be the site of short-lived, Cenozoic subduction. Central Palawan itself is composed of rock types of two distinct origins (ophiolitic igneous/metamorphic rock and continentally derived sedimentary/metasedimentary rock). Currently, no recent work exists that focuses on placing the geology of central Palawan into the proper context of subduction and the Cenozoic evolution of SE Asia. The two basic unresolved questions addressed in this study are: (1) What is the relationship and significance of the sedimentary/metasedimentary rocks exposed in central Palawan with the ophiolite, and (2) how and in what tectonic setting did subduction initiate in Palawan? This work is presented in two chapters, which were written separately for the intent of individual publication.

The first chapter addresses the relationship of the central Palawan ophiolite to the sedimentary/metasedimentary rocks by presenting new geologic observations and field measurements from central Palawan. A review of the geology of Palawan and surrounding areas is also provided. This is an important contribution because no published work yet exists that provides both a current review of the geology of central Palawan and places the rocks and structures seen in Palawan into the larger tectonic context within Southeast Asia. This critical contribution firmly places Palawan rocks in a subduction-accretion-collision setting.

The second chapter addresses how and where subduction began in Palawan. In addition to this regional-specific contribution, the work provides a blueprint for other researchers interested in addressing this previously elusive question and testing how and in what tectonic setting other ancient subduction zones may have initiated. The appendix contains a comment relevant to resolving the general problem of subduction initiation. In essence, it highlights the fact that many tests for subduction initiation have been proposed, yet, until this work, few have succeeded.
