Thesis (M.S.)--Oklahoma State University, 2016.
This study utilized a phone survey to investigate underlying motivators behind respondents' decision to participate -- or decline to take part -- from being more involved in their electric cooperative. The study focused on engagement of younger electric cooperative member owners ages 18-45 years old. The results of the study revealed younger member-owners are more likely to be engaged within the first one to two years of starting their electric service with the electric cooperative. The majority of respondents did not identify themselves as member-owners; however, they knew they had voting power. Respondents reported outside factors that kept them from attending electric cooperative meetings such as work conflicts and other commitments. Approximately, half of the respondents were informed about leadership opportunities. Respondents were motivated by incentives and there is a portion of the membership that cannot be motivated by anything to be more involved. Overall, younger members are unsure of what electric cooperatives do and how they can bring value to the organization. Younger member-owners want to be educated on the cooperative model and how they play a role within the organization.
