Thesis (M.S.)--Utica College, 2016.
This Capstone Project examined the impacts associated with the linking of smart mobile devices and data-hiding applications. The research questions posed were designed to scrutinize the criminal implications associated with mobile device data-hiding methods. The combination of a portable computer carried in a person's pocket and its ability to capture information and send it anywhere in the world suggests that smart devices are a threat to personally identifiable information (PII) and intellectual property. Additionally, devices with these capabilities have been used as tools in cybersecurity breaches and espionage as well, so they are also threats to governments and corporations. The major focus of this study includes smart mobile device security, network-based data hiding, mobile device data hiding, and hidden data detection. The literature associated with smart mobile device security revealed that present mobile device security is inadequate and that securing this platform can be accomplished partially through user vigilance. The network-based data hiding research targeted the Operation Shady Remote Access Trojan (RAT), the Duqu 2 worm, and Stegobot. This research was conducted to demonstrate that digital data hiding is being used commit crimes. To this end, the mobile device data-hiding section focused on malicious applications, spyware, Bluetooth malware, and sensor malware. This research indicated that smart mobile devices are susceptible to the same threats that target desktop and laptop computers, and have unique threats as well. The hidden data detection literature reviewed indicated that there are effective methods that can be used to detect the presence of hidden information and that these methods are beneficial to those wishing to protect digital property. Lastly, contrarian views were presented that showed that there are significant benefits associated with data hiding in specific circumstances. Keywords: Cybersecurity, Robert DeCarlo, steganography, least significant bit (LSB), covert, malware, mobile device.
