Synesthesia is a sensory phenomenon in which stimulus in one sense mode is interpreted in terms appropriate to some other sense mode and this term applies to production, from a sense-impression of one kind, of an associated mental image of a sense-impression of another kind. Synesthetic thinking promotes Production (composing or performing music engaged in imaginative or creative ways); Perception (affecting distinctions or discriminations within an art form; thinking artistically); and Reflection (stepping back from one's own perceptions or productions or those of other artists, and seeking to understand methods, difficulties, and effects achieved in holistic views).

This study attempts to introduce and explicates the special entities and phenomenon of synesthesia as a tool for understanding music as 'Total Artwork.' Synesthesia may present the content of artwork with more subtle expression and help to heighten the quality of artwork in more aesthetically impressive and distinctive ways. The purpose of this study was to uncover the possible patterns and ideas of artists' exploratory field through synesthetic theory and attempted to develop an instructional model based on various activities of synesthesia in order to help students understand the ephemeral language of music. These conceptual models served to enrich students' cognitive thinking processes in music making as an integral part of artistic training and, simultaneously, developing an acute awareness of the arts and heightened a perceptual understanding of the arts. The instructional model has five stages, based on the findings of phenomenological reflection of synesthetic theory: (1) Initial Stage---Music and Painting; (2) Intermediate Stage---Music, Movement and Expression; (3&4) Advanced Stage I and II---Total Artwork (Gesamtkunstwerk); (5) Specific Stage---Synesthetic Interpretation in Piano Music of Robert Schumann's "Phantasiestucke, Op. 12."

The successful execution of this research depended on how the concept of synesthesia works and links logically to pedagogical tool for music education, interacting 'total sensation.' In designing of these projects, the proposed models incorporated various dimensions of synesthetic thinking process with an emphasis on musical sensitivity and imagination, which in turn, contributes to one's growth and development to achieve deeper perceptions of human feelings and emotions.
