Several critical breaches have been publicized recently at large organizations. Some of the breaches are due to network vulnerabilities, but others are due to vulnerabilities caused by employee behavior. Employees have always networked with each other and through organizations. What has changed is the medium. Social networking websites and tools provide an avenue for employees to collaborate over longer distances and gives access to more networks. Social networking also leads to sharing of details with not only the members of the network but, also with the vendors that host the social networking sites and tools. With the increased use of the Internet for conducting work activities like research and collaboration, it is obvious that companies need to provide guidance and education so that employees are aware of the risks of using the Internet and sharing data across the Internet. This study examines how employees view social networking and information security policies and whether these attitudes have any effect on their intention to follow those policies. The study investigates the factors that might affect employees' attitudes toward policy and specifically looks at employee use of social networking tools, either professional, personal, or both, and considers the effects of different factors the demographics of each employee like age, gender and education. This research utilized a quantitative, non-experimental, correlational research study. The survey distributed at a large healthcare organization in Michigan included 19 questions that comprised of six demographic questions and 13 measurement questions. The sample group consisted of the population of three departments. The concepts tested included certainty of detection, compliance intention, effectiveness perception and punishment severity. According to the results of this study, there is a relationship between punishment severity, certainty of detection and employees' perception of the effectiveness of compliance and employees' intention to comply with Facebook and security policies. This study is significant because it is one of the first to explore the effects of employee attitude toward security policy specifically for the use of social networking both during work hours and on personal time at a healthcare organization. These findings can provide leadership with a body of knowledge that will help them more effectively train employees on how they can assist with protecting the network.
