An outreach program was designed to help parents in China to employ behavioral techniques to teach their developmentally delayed (DD) children. The purpose of this study was to determine if this behaviorally oriented parental intervention strategy succeeded in the following areas: (a) helping children to achieve the behavioral goals set by their parents; (b) generating positive changes in several aspects of parental teaching behavior.

Subjects were 30 children and their parents assigned to two groups. Each group included 15 children ranging in age from 10 to 14 years and in IQ from 20 to 30; they came from six classrooms located in six different schools. Random assignment of subjects was made by school. The dependent measures included the Goal Attainment Scale and an Eight Block Sorting Task which were administered initially, medially and finally.

The intervention, based on principles of behavioral modification, consisted of two, three-month sessions. In the first session, the special home treatment program was provided only to the experimental group. Parents were taught to set behavioral objectives, to chain tasks, and to use reinforcement. During the second session, the intervention was administered to both experimental and control groups.

Results indicated that both child achievement and parental teaching strategies changed positively and significantly after three months. Continued improvement emerged after six months of the treatment program in the experimental group. At the end of the program questionnaires revealed that both parents and teachers appreciated what they, and the children, had learned. They recommended that the program be continued in China.
