The survey instrument, in a closed-end format, consisted of three parts, the Betel Nut Chewing Behavior Questionnaire (21 items), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (10 items), and Nowicki-Strickland Locus of Control Scale (40 items). The data were collected via group self-reported administration to 843 subjects during the 1994-1995 academic year.

The results indicated that the prevalence rate of betel nut chewing behavior among ninth-grade students in Taitung was very high. More than half (51%) of the total sample had chewed betel nut. Separately, 71.8% of Aborigine, 40% of Chinese, 61.1% of males, and 40.2% of females had chewed betel nut.

The three strongest predictors of the six factors: family factors, peer factors, and personality factors (with the explained variance being 29.7%, 38.7%, and 25.3% for the total sample) were analyzed by using stepwise multiple regression. The total explanatory power was very strong and explained 51.6% of the variance of adolescents' betel nut chewing behavior. The strongest predictor in these six factors was "number of best friends chewing betel nut" for the total sample.
