520 $a In this world, political leaders of many countries often use sports as the means for their political needs. Among those leaders who used sports as a political means, no doubt the Chinese Communist Party Leadership is one of the best.
520 $a Through many years, China was essentially closed to foreign cultural exchange, as was its physical culture and sports. Such a closing was culminated during the period of "the Great Cultural Revolution" (1966-1976).
520 $a This paper studied the effects of the Great Cultural Revolution on selected aspects of sport development, policy, and ethics in the People's Republic of China at that time.
520 $a This paper was an analytical and philosophic study. It probed and answered such selected questions by studying related-published-information of what really happened in China's sport as well as first person accounts. Therefore, its findings are descriptive rather than prescriptive.
520 $a The study found that during the Great Cultural Revolution, under Mao's autocratic dictatorship, China's physical culture and sport lost their intrinsic value. There were no sports for sports' sake in China. The value of physical culture and sport was the value of Mao's political needs and was judged by whether physical culture and sport could be used to achieve Mao and Maoists' political goals. Mao and Maoists used sport as a political means for their needs: (1) to increase Mao's personal cult, (2) to purge Mao's political opponents, and (3) to promote internal propaganda, national defense, Chinese communist foreign policy, social construction and social revolution.
520 $a The study also found that Mao and Maoists' ethical basis concerning sport was based in ethical relativism and egoistic utilitarianism. Mao and Maoists developed such an ethical policy solely based on their own good. Therefore, arbitrariness, imperiousness, and inconsistency were the basis of policy making. All of which gave birth to a confused situation which did great damage to China's sport and seriously hindered sport from further development.
