This study compares news images of male and female candidates in legislative campaigns in Taiwan using both quantitative content analysis and qualitative contextual analysis. Pierre Bourdieu's theory of capital and fields is adapted and used to examine how social resources are practiced and distributed to men and women in each social space. Furthermore, the way in which these distributions construct and determine a candidate's appropriateness for a political campaign is analyzed in a political, economic and social context.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The content analysis had four main findings. First, women are covered differently from men. While women are more likely to receive coverage of soft issues, like personal life and appearance, men are covered more with hard issues, such as laws and economic issues. Second, despite the ideological differences between them, the four newspapers surveyed show similar patterns covering both genders. Opposition newspapers do not give more news coverage to female candidates or focus on different issues than other newspapers. Third, females of different parties receive similar amounts and types of news coverage. However, female candidates of the national party tend to be covered more with issues like social security, while those of the opposition parties with political issues like human rights, due to the political background. Fourth, the coverage of female candidates does not change across the time. Despite the women's movement in Taiwan, news images of women were found to be consistently gender-oriented.

The difference in news coverage between genders and women's disadvantaged situation in the political field are related at least to other two fields: social, and economic. Each field constructs its own rules of practices of how an agent acts with and perceives each other with limited amount and forms of capital. While women generally possess less resources than men, their chances of accumulating more capital and achieving goals are further constrained throughout each field. This study suggests that gender, like race and ethnicity, acts like a catalyst enhancing the operations of power relations in a field. Media institutions and news reporters are both affected by, and act to reinforce existing constructions of gender.
