Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Pennsylvania, 1995.
This dissertation has attempted to establish a theoretical framework for the prosody-syntax interaction in Chinese syntax and morphology in light of the Tree Adjoining Grammar introduced by Kroch (1989), and of the Prosodic Morphology Theory developed by McCarthy & Prince (1993). Within this framework, three related problems have been adequately accounted for from a prosodic perspective. First, the classical syntactic problem that no two constituents are allowed after the main verb and that a bare verb is banned in Ba-construction is explained by the proposal of a weak prosodic non-branching node. Secondly, the word order change in Early Archaic Chinese is explained in terms of stress shift. Thirdly, syntactic compounding in Classical and Modern Chinese is explained by the concept of prosodic word which is generated through foot formation. The prosody-syntax interaction proposed to solve the above problems is bi-directional, with syntax governing prosody and prosody constraining syntax.Subjects--Topical Terms:
