Thesis (Ph.D.)--Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, 1995.
In 1979, China started economic reform. Economic reform involved the restructuring of China's domestic economy, with increased opportunities for productive savings and investment, and the opening of China's economy to international trade and foreign investment. This dissertation studied the effects of foreign trade, capital inflow, and investment on China's economic growth. Empirically, I investigated the economic reform and growth by employing three different kinds of econometric models: simple neoclassical endogenous growth model, causality model, and simultaneous equations model. These models allowed estimations of the impacts of capital formation (investment), labor force expansion, agricultural growth, capital inflow, and expansion of trade on economic growth in China. Special interest was paid to the post-reform period, from 1979 to 1992.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The empirical results illustrated the impacts of trade on China's economic growth. In the neoclassical model, trade growth contributed to economic growth. In the causality model, Granger causality ran from trade growth to economic growth. In the simultaneous equations model, trade growth affected economic growth and economic growth also affected trade growth. All three models confirmed the positive impacts of international trade on economic growth in China. The results also illustrated the positive effects of labor and capital growth on China's economic growth. Structural changes between pre and post reform periods were also tested in the study. The cointegration tests using post reform data set revealed a long term relationship between trade growth and economic growth in China. The unavailability of some data sets presented some unsatisfied results and problems in the estimations. The policy implications from this study indicated that promoting trade should be carried on throughout all economic reforms in China.
