Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Chicago, 1995.
This research seeks to explain how an individual's education and socioeconomic status is attained during the course of Taiwan's development. Ethnicity and the stratified school system, which are considered the structures intensifying current socioeconomic inequality, are explored with an emphasis on how they coexist with a relatively high social mobility and modest social stratification. Drawing observations from two large island wide surveys, this research first identifies the differences in the patterns of educational attainment of the dominant mainlanders and local Taiwanese. Although the gap between these two ethnic groups is evident, their transition rates in the upper secondary education and above are almost identical before the mid 1950s. This suggests that the view that Taiwanese tend to have less education because of the language barrier is problematic. The analysis also shows that the effect of ethnicity on education has reduced greatly and mainlanders have no advantage whatsoever in attending elite schools throughout the entire period. The narrowing gap in education is in part caused by the decline in attainment among the children of the recent cohort of mainlanders. These mainlanders were born of former servicemen, often from villages and with little education themselves.Subjects--Topical Terms:

On the relation between educational credentials and earnings, the analysis shows that mainlander's advantage is more uniform across sectors. The mainlander's advantage has more to do with an individual's own educational credentials. In addition, earning potentials are also related to the labor market structures that evolved during the course of Taiwan's economic development. The predominance of small to medium size firms sets limits for the chances of promotion, thereby affecting the wage one can attain in small firm settings.
