The purpose of the study was to discover patterns and frequencies of EFL learners' strategy use, types and potency levels of their motivation for language learning, and the effect of gender and grade level attributes; it also explored the relationship between EFL learners' motivation and strategy use.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Data were collected from 741 tenth and twelfth graders in Sichuan Province of P. R. China. The major research instruments were the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL 7.0 ESL/EFL, Oxford, 1990) and the Inventory of Motivation for Language Learning (IMLL, based on Printrich and De Groot, 1990; Gardner, 1985; and Horwitz, 1987). The self-efficacy, expectancy-value, and intrinsic motivation theories were employed as a framework in developing the IMLL items. Data analysis procedures included descriptive statistics, MANOVAs, Pearson product-moment correlations, ANOVAs, and multiple regression of motivation variables to overall frequency of strategy use. Additional information was obtained through content analysis of subjects' responses to open-ended questions. Analyses of the internal consistency and empirical construct validity of the research instruments were included.

Descriptive analyses reveal that subjects' overall average strategy use frequency was low and their motivation potency was moderate. Analyses of variance procedures yield significant gender and grade level differences, with females scoring higher than males and the 10th graders outperforming the 12th graders. There exist significant positive correlations between strategy use frequency and motivation potency. The motivation variables (intensity, self-efficacy, task-values) are all significant predictors of strategy use frequency. Motivation potency is more closely related to subjects' self-rated language achievement than is strategy use frequency. These findings are consistent with prior studies, except that of grade level differences with the null hypothesis rejected in the negative direction. The results are discussed in relation to task and environmental variables and suggestions for future research include further refinement and validation of the motivation measure and triangulation of research methods.
