520 $a It is my assumption that every society has a sacred center. It consists of a set of common values, symbols, rituals, and myths, thereby giving a sense of identity to members of society. The ruling regime legitimizes its rule by claiming its representation of the sacred center. In order for a group to successfully challenge the ruling regime, the group has to displace the ruling regime as representative of the sacred center. Center displacement consists of three stages: value typification, transition, and sacralization. When a group becomes sacralized, it has the command of the people.
520 $a The 1989 Chinese student movement is analyzed by means of the framework of center displacement. The study is based on an interpretative reading of writings coming out of the movement, as well as secondary reports on the movement. My analysis shows that through an effective use of the cultural system, students were able to symbolically displace the authorities as representatives of the sacred center. Because students became a sacred group, they were able to draw on an intensive as well as an extensive degree of support. Since students displaced the ruling authorities as representatives of the sacred center and thereby delegitimized the latter's rule, the authorities had to resort to the use of force to demonstrate its power.
