The overall purpose of this dissertation is to compare etymophonological characteristics of the three language families of Chinese dialects, Sino-Japanese and Sino-Korean. This study is also concerned with an etymophonological affinity among the three language families, and the origin of Sino-Korean based on the phonological comparison with Middle Chinese, Chinese dialects, and Sino-Japanese.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The degrees of etymophonological affinity has been examined on the basis of the high number of the identical rules from Middle Chinese to the three language families. I conclude that Sino-Korean shares a strong etymophonological affinity with literary Taiwanese, while it keeps a weak etymophonological tie with Kan-on with respect to the rule pattern of initial changes. With regard to the development of final ending consanants, I find that Sino-Korean shares a strong etymophonological affinity with southern Chinese such as literary Taiwanese and Cantonese; on the other hand, it keeps the weakest affinity with the Suzhou dialect as far as changes of finals are concerned.

In discussing the origin of Sino-Korean, I conclude that Sino-Korean originates from the Changan language of northern Late Middle Chinese in the 7th-8th centuries rather than the language of the Qieyun in 601 A.D.
