Chinese American women's histories and perspectives have been silenced and remained unrecorded in American history. In recognizing this situation, this participatory research study utilized feminist oral history with six Chinese American women to recover, recount, and record their family histories and stories.

The researcher entered into dialogue with first, second, and third generation Chinese American women, and they recounted their family histories and reflected on experiences which influenced their development of voice and cultural identity. After each dialogue, the researcher transcribed them and the participants reflected on their life stories. After conducting two dialogues with each participant, the researcher developed the dialogues into written narrative accounts of their family history. In analyzing the data, the generative themes were identified and discussed with the participants.

One generative theme centered on participants' family histories beginning with their grandparents' and parents' lives in China and their immigration stories, and this formed the foundation of their cultural identity. In addition, Chinese traditions and stories were an important influence in conveying cultural values. Chinese language development, supported both at home and at community Chinese schools, also fostered the participants' cultural identity.

Another generative theme focused on grandmothers and mothers as important role models and the mother-daughter relationship as sources of strength for the Chinese American women in this study. Participants recognized that their mothers had a voice in their family, and that their parents were also supportive of their daughter's voice. The participants also experienced silencing forces at school and within their communities, including condescending stereotypes of Chinese American women, and negative attitudes towards Chinese regional dialects.

Through recovering, recounting, and recording their family histories and stories, these six Chinese American women developed a deeper understanding of their cultural identity. Their oral histories contribute a unique, firsthand perspective and voice to Chinese American women's history and to our understanding of the development of voice and cultural identity for Chinese American women.
