Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Hawai'i at Manoa, 1993.
The purpose of this study is to examine China's age and sex patterns of mortality, especially the differences between China's patterns and those patterns observed in other countries and implied by different mortality models, and further to model China's mortality patterns. With child survivorship data from the 1982 Census and the 1988 Fertility Survey, infant mortality was estimated using Brass's method; with mortality data from the 1975 Cancer Survey, the 1987 Population Sample Survey, the 1988 Fertility Survey, the 1982 and 1990 Censuses, and population data from China's four national censuses in 1953, 1964, 1982, and 1990, mortality by age and sex were estimated sing the U.N. life table method and Coale's intercensus life table method. Data quality is examined thoroughly and data errors are corrected carefully before they are used. With these estimated results, age and sex patterns of mortality in China are analyzed in detail, including presentations of mortality, survivorship, life expectancy and temporary life expectancy by age and sex, comparisons of China's patterns with patterns observed in Taiwan, Japan, the United States, and Sweden, and patterns implied by the U.N. Far East and General models, Coale-Demeny West and North models and Brass's model of both General and Africa standards. The analyses showed that China's mortality patterns were featured by high child mortality at age 1 to 10, lower adult mortality at age 20 to 35, small mortality sex difference in general, and less variation in the age pattern of mortality sex difference. Furthermore, the features of the mortality patterns appeared to be associated with China's demographic, socioeconomic and public health conditions. The study further showed that China's mortality patterns were relatively stable, different from other observed patterns and could not be expressed well by commonly used mortality models. Finally the age and sex patterns of mortality in China were described with Siler's competing hazard model and Brass's logit system respectively, and the modeled results properly reflected China's mortality dynamics. Based on the modeled results, a quinqennial life table series by sex were generated for China from 1950 to 2000.Subjects--Topical Terms:
