Thesis (Ph.D.)--Temple University, 1993.
Villette is a peculiar psychological self-study of a nineteenth-century English woman driven by erotic longing, creative impulse and a religious disposition. It is also a text whose important meanings are either consciously hidden by the narrator/protagonist, or buried in the unconscious of the author herself. This dissertation examines the complex play of appearance and reality, the "ideal" and the "real," the conscious mind and the unconscious, and tries to restore to the work the richly ambiguous meaning that Chinese readers might otherwise tend to miss.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Intended both as an introduction and a guide for Chinese readers and translators, this study provides an introductory essay and an extended series of suggested annotations to the text. Section One of the essay outlines the thesis and major topics of the dissertation. Section Two, mainly for the convenience of a Western audience, briefly reviews the contemporary Chinese literary situation, and contrasts against Western critical tradition what was once the predominant critical practice. Section Three situates Villette in the context of Bronte's oeuvre, particularly in contrast to its famous predecessor Jane Eyre. Section Four discusses some of the literary concepts and techniques Villette employs that may be unfamiliar to the average Chinese: ambiguity, invisibility and the self. Sections Five and Six are concerned with the dialectics of the religious, erotic and textual motifs that are crucial, conflicting and interweaving elements throughout the work.

My efforts at annotation center on the explanation of cultural differences as well as explications de texte. Some of my notes provide immediate clarification of a minor point; others offer alternative interpretations where ambiguities occur; many take the form of mini-essays. Certain entries might appear unnecessary for English-speaking readers; but they are included to assist readers unacquainted with the niceties of the English language, nineteenth-century British culture, or Western critical tradition.
