Thesis (Ph.D.)--Yale University, 1993.
This is a study of disyllabic words consisting of two identical syllables, the "reduplicatives," in the Chu Ci, a collection of poems mostly written by Qu Yuan (343?-277? B.C.)$\sp1$. In the past, reduplicatives were regarded as one of the subcategories of lianmianzi/ 'linked characters;' reduplication was merely regarded as one means of word formation.$\sp2$ Research has concentrated on comparing the meaning of the reduplicative with that of the unreduplicated form, "one-syllable form," or arguing whether the reduplicatives share the same meanings with the one-syllable forms. This study has a wider scope. Essentially, it is an attempt to make a linguistic study of the reduplicatives in the Chu Ci, of their morphology, meanings, and their position in a line. A tentative proposal results from this study, namely, that reduplicatives, at least the majority of the reduplicatives from our data, may have been the result of a phonological process involving prosodic meter. This proposal is supported by three facts: (1) the number of reduplicatives is greater in poetry than in prose; (2) the semantic content of the reduplicatives and their one-syllable forms is very similar; and (3) the line patterns suggest the need for disyllabic words in certain positions in poetic lines. ftn$\sp1$A detailed definition of the reduplicatives will be provided in the Introduction.Subjects--Topical Terms:

$\sp2$The definition of lianmianzi/ is not well defined in the literature. A very rough definition can be stated as follows: a disyllabic word whose two members share some kind of phonetic similarity.
